A Pea Shoot Experiment

For a very limited time (this coming Saturday at Silver Spring Market), I’m bringing pea shoots! Pea shoots are the young growth of any kind of pea. They’re crunchy with a mild sweet taste and packed with vitamins.

This is something I thought I’d try after randomly watching a video about Owl’s Nest Farm, another small vegetable farm in Maryland. But maybe it wasn’t random; maybe the algorithm knows me too well. This is the first time I’m growing pea shoots directly in the soil. Previously, at other farm jobs, I only grew them in trays.

Here’s a dish from my comedian friend Laura Williams. She added some of my radish and pea shoots to scrambled eggs and melted cheese on a tortilla for a healthy breakfast taco. Pea shoots go really well in a salad, sandwich, or as a garnish.

After this small success, and a failure of half of what I planted not growing at all, I’ll plan to grow more this year and see what happens.
