How to Store Farmers Market Tomatoes

Tomatoes grown at the farm

So you went to the farmers market and got some fresh tomatoes from the market. Do you put them in the fridge? No need. Doesn’t matter what kind they are either. Unlike store tomatoes, most farmers market tomatoes are picked within a few days of selling. That means you can leave them out on a counter or window sill and they won’t go bad.

Better yet, put them in a bowl on display for your guests to see. They’ll ask, “Where did you get those tomatoes? They look so different from the ones in the store.” And you’ll reply “Oh you mean those tomatoes? They’re from the farmers market.” Then explain to them why the farmers market is better (without being too righteous) and make sure to mention the Cylcospora outbreak in lettuce.

Putting them in the fridge might make them go bad faster because the condensation from the cool air will cause them to rot or mold.

Market tomatoes taste and even smell better than store ones! Also, remember to add a little salt to all tomato slices. Salt brings out the flavor.
